The attack took place at the hotel on Wednesday night. The BBC and Dawn reported that.

The Chinese ambassador to Pakistan, who was visiting Quetta, got up at the hotel but was not there at the time of the blast.

“I met him a while ago,” said Ziaullah Lango, the province’s home minister, who said the ambassador was safe. His morale is strong.

He said the ambassador’s visit would end on Thursday.

Provincial government spokesman Liaquat Shahwani said in a tweet that the Chinese ambassador had met with Nang Rang province Chief Minister Jam Kamal in the afternoon before the attack.

A police official named Nasir Malik said a car bomb had exploded at the Serena Hotel.

Wasim Beg, an official at a local hospital, said four bodies had been found and that the condition of many of the injured was critical.

The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said it was a suicide attack.

It was not immediately clear if the attack targeted the Chinese ambassador or delegation. However, there have been previous Taliban attacks on Chinese nationals and various projects in the region.

Near the luxury Serena Hotel is the Iranian Consulate and Provincial Parliament Building.
